Thanks for the warning... I always recommend that people do the following when buying a computer:
1. Know your needs: identify what you want to do with the computer so you know what you will need to purchase with it. Computers require software, and most software does not come in the box. Also consider the other items you will need (printer, monitor, etc.).
2. Do your homework: find out what's out there and what basic things you can do to keep it from falling apart. This is especially tied into the first point, because you'll need to set a budget for your computer, software, and other items.
3. Take a knowledgeable friend: there are many brands and gimmicks on the market, and salespeople will sell you an empty box if they can (okay, there are some honest folks out there). Taking a friend that knows about computers will help you avoid making a bad decision and will (hopefully) keep that pushy salesperson from being too pushy.
Of course, if the salesperson is really being pushy, customers have a right to walk out of the store and call the Division of Trade and Consumer Protection to file a complaint.
